Chapter 4
Career paths & skills
What a career involves, the skills it asks for, and salary data from official statistics.
Choosing a course abroad is also choosing a direction. This chapter looks at what a career involves day to day, the skills and qualifications it asks for, and what official statistics say about pay and demand.
Salary and job figures here come from national statistics offices: the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the US, the Office for National Statistics in the UK, Statistics Canada, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. They describe groups of workers, not what any one person will earn. Each figure links to its source table and shows the date we checked it.
Some professions are regulated, and a degree from abroad may need to be recognised before you can work in one. Where that applies, we link to the body that decides. Read how we choose sources in the editorial policy.
